What to do in the event of an outage
In the event of a power outage
Most power outages pass quickly, but there may be situations where darkness and cold come as a surprise. If the electricity goes out, first test whether there is electricity anywhere in the house or apartment. Next, make sure that the fault is not with the fuses. See if the neighbour has lights and if the streetlights are on. If the lights are out in the immediate area, it is a power outage that is more extensive than the home’s electricity network.
- Electricity distribution companies monitor their distribution networks around the clock. For this reason, there is no need to call the electricity distribution company about a small outage. When a power outage is prolonged, you can get more information about the outage on the company’s website. If you see that power lines are damaged or a tree has fallen on them, it is a good idea to report it to our fault service.
- Turn off the power to electrical appliances in the event of an outage. Lights can be left on, but e.g. stoves, irons, washing machines can cause a fire if they are switched on after the power is restored.
- Do not open the freezer door. It takes more than 2 days for a cabinet freezer to warm up to 0 degrees, and a container freezer even longer.
- Do not touch or attempt to clear trees that have fallen over a power line. There may be a-voltage on the power line.
In the event of major storm damage / disruption, larger 20 kV power lines are repaired first. In this way, a large number of customers in urban areas can be restored to electricity distribution as quickly as possible. After this, the focus is on securing water supply and restoring the electricity to hospitals and nursing homes, among other things.

After a power outage
After a storm, there may still be faults in the electricity network that have not been found. If you notice that electrical appliances at home are working strangely or that the lights are brighter or dimmer than normal, it may be due to a so-called breakage of the neutral conductor. This may cause damage to the equipment. If you suspect such a fault, turn off the power at the main switch and contact Nurmijärven Sähkö immediately.
Compensation for power outages
Standard compensation is automatically paid to our customers for a power outage that lasts more than 12 hours. The compensation will be paid on the electricity invoice following the power outage or the one following it.
The amount of the standard compensation depends on the length of the power outage. An outage is considered to have started when information about the fault has been received through the network system or based on a customer’s notification. The outage is considered to have ended when the fault has been repaired.
